Programs are available in the Scotland County Schools for students with special needs ages 3-21. Program areas are Mentally Disabled, Behaviorally/Emotionally Disabled, Specific Learning Disabled, Multiply Handicapped, Hearing Impaired, Orthopedically Impaired, Visually Impaired, Developmentally Delayed, Other Health Impaired, Autistic, Deaf-Blind and Traumatic Brain Injured.
A broad curriculum of services is available to these children according to their individual needs. Services range from hospital-homebound services, self-contained special classes, resource rooms to consultative services. Related services needed in order for students to benefit from special education are available to children with special needs. These include, but are not limited to, speech and language therapy, occupational therapy, physical therapy, special transportation, adapted physical education and diagnostic services. Children determined to need services not available in their schools may attend a school outside of their school attendance area in order to receive these services.
Additional services available to some exceptional students include Special Olympics, therapeutic riding, swimming, and developmental day summer program.
