SCHOLARS

Scotland SCHOLARS is the name of the after school program that exists at all of the elementary and middle schools in the district. Designed for students who need extra time and assistance, SCHOLARS also provides a safe and supportive environment during the after school hours.

All of the elementary schools and two of the middle schools are recognized as licensed child-care centers by the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services; they have all been awarded four-star ratings. In addition to providing academic assistance, particularly in reading and math, SCHOLARS offers recreational, cultural, and enrichment activities, as well as daily snacks and homework help. Computer work is also part of the weekly activities for students.

Teachers and teaching assistants comprise about 97% of the SCHOLARS staff, an advantage in that they know the students, and they know the curriculum. SCHOLARS students are transported home on yellow school buses.

More than 1,400 students, all of whom were recommended by their teachers or principals, participated in SCHOLARS in 2004-05. SCHOLARS is supported by 21st Century Community Learning Centers grants from the United States Department of Public Instruction.
