The SCHOLARS Program at
Our program IS NOT an After
q Snack Break – Each day between dismissal from the school day and the start of SCHOLARS, students meet in the cafeteria for a healthy snack which includes individually packed snacks and a juice or milk.
q Homework Help - The goal of Homework Help is not homework completion. The goal is to develop understanding of the most difficult parts of student assignments. Most students do complete assignments but are directed to begin with their toughest assignments first while assistance is available. Each student has been provided a homework log book to write down daily assignments.
q Orchard Software - Dr. Prince has purchased this computer program to provide academic reinforcement with the use of technology. Students work in the computer lab three days a week on skills prescribed by teachers or the computer program. Students get to enjoy high interest, interactive computer games when assignments are completed with a passing score. Objectives are those of NC Standard Course of Study so it reinforces what is being taught in the classroom.
q Math & Reading Focus – Although each day we do work on language and math skills through homework help, computer lessons and integrated enrichment activities, we devote Monday to Math topics and Wednesday to language topics. Tuesday and Thursday are reserved for specialized tutorials with classroom teachers working the program.
q Enrichment
- Opportunities for extended learning take place
weekly with designated Enrichments blocks.
On Tuesday and Thursday of each week students are engaged with activities
that include community involvement, cultural arts, life skills, exercise Health
and nutrition. Services are provided (some
for a fee and some for free) by partners such as 4H – NC Cooperative
Extension, The Red Cross as well as the talents of our teachers and relations
with the Edwin Morgan Center. Planned
activities include trips for activities at local facilities such as
q Parent
Involvement – Parents are encouraged to
participate in our program by bringing their talents to our groups. If you have a special talent you would like
to share please contact Jack Davern at 277-4312 to schedule a date and time for
you to share with us. Periodic meetings
will be held for parents and the community to attend. In the plans right now include a Photo Art
Exhibit, a Science Fair, and a Play.
Watch for details of these events coming your way soon!
q Schedules – for up to date schedules contact Mrs. Warpool at 277-4312.
