The SCHOLARS Program at Covington Street aims to meet the academic, cultural, social and emotional needs of students and staff.  Our expectations include an understanding of why we are all here and stress the importance of positive behavior that demonstrates good traits of character.

Our program IS NOT an After School Day Care Center.  Our facility does have a 4-star rating from the North Carolina Department of Child Development. Our program that runs much like a school schedule with classes that focus on academics with enrichment, remediation and previews of what is to come.  Each week students are provided with dedicated times that address the following areas:

q   Snack Break Each day between dismissal from the school day and the start of SCHOLARS, students meet in the cafeteria for a healthy snack which includes individually packed snacks and a juice or milk.

q   Homework Help - The goal of Homework Help is not homework completion.  The goal is to develop understanding of the most difficult parts of student assignments.  Most students do complete assignments but are directed to begin with their toughest assignments first while assistance is available.  Each student has been provided a homework log book to write down daily assignments.

q   Orchard Software - Dr. Prince has purchased this computer program to provide academic reinforcement with the use of technology.  Students work in the computer lab three days a week on skills prescribed by teachers or the computer program.  Students get to enjoy high interest, interactive computer games when assignments are completed with a passing score.  Objectives are those of NC Standard Course of Study so it reinforces what is being taught in the classroom.

q   Math & Reading FocusAlthough each day we do work on language and math skills through homework help, computer lessons and integrated enrichment activities, we devote Monday to Math topics and Wednesday to language topics.  Tuesday and Thursday are reserved for specialized tutorials with classroom teachers working the program.

q   Enrichment - Opportunities for extended learning take place weekly with designated Enrichments blocks.  On Tuesday and Thursday of each week students are engaged with activities that include community involvement, cultural arts, life skills, exercise Health and nutrition.  Services are provided (some for a fee and some for free) by partners such as 4H – NC Cooperative Extension, The Red Cross as well as the talents of our teachers and relations with the Edwin Morgan Center.  Planned activities include trips for activities at local facilities such as St. Andrews College, and Rockers Roller Dome.

q   Parent InvolvementParents are encouraged to participate in our program by bringing their talents to our groups.  If you have a special talent you would like to share please contact Jack Davern at 277-4312 to schedule a date and time for you to share with us.  Periodic meetings will be held for parents and the community to attend.  In the plans right now include a Photo Art Exhibit, a Science Fair, and a Play.  Watch for details of these events coming your way soon!

q   Schedulesfor up to date schedules contact Mrs. Warpool at 277-4312.

q   REMINDERif your child is going to be absent for any reason from SCHOLARS you must notify the Office or Mrs. Warpool in writing or by a phone call.  If you child is not present and no message was received regarding the absence you will be called to be sure that your child is in a safe location and to remind you about letting us know when your child will be out.  Remember this is for the safety of each and every child.
