Positive Behavior Support

Postive Behavior Support (PBS) is a state initiative that works to promote better discipline in schools. There are several components of PBS - clear expectations, instruction, incentives/rewards, intervention, and the use of data to drive decisions regarding discipline. At Spring Hill, we use the acronym ROAR (Responsible, Organized, Attentive, Respectful) to remind students and teachers of what our expectations are. These expectations are stated very clearly and deliberately in our school matrix. At different times during the school year, appropriate behaviors are modeled and explained to students as well. This promoted a consistent understanding of what is allowed and what is not. PBS is driven by a team that consists of teachers, support staff, and administration. Our PBS team has received a great deal of training and is always looking for ways to improve our program.

The incentive/reward component of our PBS program is two-fold. Students can receive discretionary tickets at anytime for demonstrating appropriate behaviors. These tickets are very valuable as they can be used to purchase school supplies and enter drawings for prizes. Students also have the opportunity to earn stamps in each of their classes. These stamps are placed on a Passport that each students carries from class to class. Passports are collected weekly by homeroom teachers and running totals are recorded. By earning a required number of stamps, students are granted entry into special events. For our 8th graders, this includes their Prom. Be sure to do your part in encouraging your student to keep up with his or her Passport!

During our first year of PBS (2008-2009), we experienced awesome results. Office referrals were reduced by nearly 40% compared to the previous school year. Out of school suspension (OSS) days declined by approximately 60%. As the new school year continues, our team is excited about carrying PBS to the next level by offering additional interventions and opportunities. If you are interested in serving as a part of our PBS team in any capacity, please contact Mr. Peed.
