For the second year, Washington Park students have participated in the American Heart Association's fundraiser, Jump Rope For Heart. Allen Adeimy, Physical Education teacher, coordinated this project for students in 2nd-5th grades. Coach A, as he is lovingly known by students, spent one PE class discussing the causes of heart attacks and strokes. Stories of how heart disease has affected students' lives were also discussed.
Children asked family, neighbors, and church communities to sponsor them in their jumping events. Students explained to sponsors that pledges are used by the American Heart Association to fund research, to support families of cardiovascular patients, and to provide physical education opportunities for school age kids. On the Jump Rope For Heart event day, students participated in forty minutes of cardiovascular exercise. The PTA provided refreshments for the children to enjoy after exercising. This year, Washington Park students raised over $3800.00 for the American Heart Association! Students who raised over $100 each were recognized by the local newspaper. The top individual fundraiser collected $250! The class which raised the most ($600) was rewarded with a pizza party. Way to go Panthers - You're Lifesavers!!
