The Scotland High School Band Program has a long and rich tradition in Scotland County. It has
also been recognized as one of the foremost band programs in North Carolina.
As early as 1956, when the high school was still known as Laurinburg High School, the Band made
its mark by adopting the traditional Scottish kilt and plaid as its official uniform. When the county
high schools combined to make Scotland High School in 1967, the band quickly established itself as a
major player on the state band scene, sending a large assembly of students to the All-State Honors Band
for several years in a row. Throughout the years, there have been numerous directors and assistant
directors, but the band has preserved its high standard of integrity and excellence. The Scotland High
School Band Program continues to be a source of pride for the students who compose it and for the community
that supports it.
The Band has had notable performances in local, regional, and national arenas. The band has performed
in the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York City, the Tangerine Bowl in Orlando, and at the North Carolina
State Music Conference. The Band currently has the longest string of superior ratings (25 years in a row) for a
Grade VI band of any school in our district.
The Scotland High School Band Program is comprised of three concert ensembles-the Academy Band, the Concert Band,
and the Symphonic Band; the Fighting Scots Marching Band; the Scotland High School Junior Varsity and Varsity Winter
Guards; and the Scotland High School Winter Percussion.
The Scotland High School Band Program has a high educational standard of excellence. The Program seeks to teach
both musical skills and life values through the study and performance of music.
