
Mark A. Doerffel, Director of Bands
Originally from the Florida Keys, Mr. Doerffel received his Bachelor of Music Education from Louisiana State University and his Master of
Music Education from Appalachian State University.
Mr. Doerffel taught at schools in South Florida before coming to North Carolina to pursue an advanced degree, and most
recently taught at E. A. Laney High School in Wilmington, NC for six years.
Mr. Doerffel has performed on trombone with: The North Carolina Symphony, Wilmington Symphony Orchestra, Long
Bay Symphony, Western Piedmont Symphony Orchestra, Florida Keys Symphony Orchestra, Key West Pops Symphony,
Maynard Ferguson, Tommy Dorsey Orchestra, Artie Shaw Orchestra, Glenn Miller Orchestra, Baton Rouge Little Theater
Orchestra, Dallas Brass, The Temptations and the Four Tops, Gloria Estefan, Debbie Reynolds, Al Martino, and the Paradise Big
Band.
Mr. Doerffel is a founding member of the Wilmington Tuba Ensembles
and the Port City Tuba Quartet, performing Solo and Lead Euphonium in concert performances in Southeast North Carolina.
Mr. Doerffel was recognized by the National Honor Roll as being an Outstanding American Teacher for the 2005-2006 school year. He
was also recognized as Who's Who in America for 2005 and 2006.

Justin R. Hammonds, Associate Director of Bands
Mr. Hammonds is a native of Thomasville, North Carolina and a graduate of Central High School. As a trumpet player at Central,
Mr. Hammonds was a member of the Wind Ensemble and the "Spartan Legion" Marching Band. He performed as principal trumpet with the
North Carolina All-State Orchestra, Northwest District Honors Band, and Greensboro Youth Symphony Orchestra. It was during these
years Mr. Hammonds found that his "passion" for music became his daily motivation.
It was this motivation that carried Mr. Hammonds to Appalachian State University
where he performed with the Appalachian Wind Ensemble, Appalachian Symphony Orchestra, the Marching Mountaineers, the "BBQ Brass Quintet",
and the ASU Men's Glee Club. Mr. Hammonds was an active member of the North Carolina Teaching Fellows Program, and a brother of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia.
He also served one year as president of ASU's chapter of the Collegiate Music Educator's National Conference (CMENC) and was the president and founder of
ASU's chapter of the National Band Association.
Upon completing his student teaching at South Caldwell High School in Caldwell County, North Carolina Mr. Hammonds moved back to his
hometown and was appointed the Interim Director of Band and Chorus Programs at Thomasville High School. This proved to be a truly defining
experience for his development both as an artist and as an educator. Now Mr. Hammonds joins the Scotland High School family with many high
hopes for his future in Laurinburg.

Mary Beth Smith, Woodwind Coordinator
Mrs. Mary Beth Smith is currently the band director and music teacher at Southern Middle School in Aberdeen, NC. In 1994, she received her Bachelor of Music degree in Music Education from Appalachian State University. In 2003, she received her National Board Certification in Early Adolescent/Young Adulthood Music. Mrs. Smith was selected as the South Asheboro Middle School Teacher of the Year in 2005. Under her direction, her students have received superior and excellent ratings at Concert Band Festival and Solo/Ensemble Festival. She has had students participate in All-County, All-District, and All-State Honor Bands each year. She has also conducted many honor bands throughout NC. Mrs. Smith is a member of National Association for Music Education (MENC), National Band Association (NBA), North Carolina Music Educators Association (NCMEA), North Carolina Bandmasters Association (NCBA), Southeastern District Bandmasters Association (SEDBA), and Moore County Band Directors Association (MCBDA). She currently lives in Fayetteville, NC with her husband, Bill.

Mark Roddy, Percussion Coordinator
Mark Roddy has taught, consulted, and written for many award winning high school percussion programs throughout the state of North Carolina. He is currently on the instructional staff for the University of North Carolina at Pembroke "Spirit of the Carolina's" Drumline as an undergraduate student. His performance experience include performances with the Tarheel Sun Drum and Bugle Corps, Guilford Court House National Park Fife and Drum Corps, The Piedmont Wind Symphony, Lee County Orchestra, Fayetteville Symphony Orchestra, Florence Symphony Orchestra as well as many of UNCP's upper level ensembles including The "P3" Percussion Ensemble.
Before coming to Scotland Mark was director of percussion at South Granville High School in Creedmoor, NC, and Jack Britt High School in Fayetteville NC. Mark is currently completing his music education degree at The University of North Carolina at Pembroke with a concentration in percussion studying under Tracy Wiggins. His teachers include: Tracy Wiggins, Jim Brandt, Mike Worley, Keone Cunningham, Pat Petrillo, and Steve Schweizer. Mark is a member of the Percussion Arts Society, CMENC, Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, and is an endorser of Grover Percussion, Silverfox Sticks and Mallets, and Carolina Percussive Concepts.

Jenny Stone, Guard Instructor
Jenny Stone, a 2008 graduate from Scotland High School, has extensive performance experience
in Marching Band and Winter Guard. Ms. Stone was a proud member of the Fighting Scots Marching
Band for five years and marched Drum Corps for two seasons. Summer of 2006, she was a color guard
member of the Carolina Gold Drum Corps. The following summer she marched with Crossmen Drum and
Bugle Corps from San Antonio, TX. Ms. Stone participated with the Winter Guard Programs at Scotland
for 7 seasons. She was a part of the 2006 winter guard team that won 2nd place in the A-class division
at the WGI World Championships, and during the 2008 season, Ms. Stone helped direct and instruct the
award winning Scholastic A-class and Cadet class winter guards at Scotland.
Currently, Ms. Stone is pursuing a cosmetology degree from Sandhills Community College.

Lynda Kachman, Guard Choreographer
A 1997 graduate of South Granville High School, Lynda offers a wealth of performing and instructional experience, having marched with the Tarheel Sun Drum and Bugle Corps in 1996 and CVP in 1999. She has been a clinician with Central Carolina Camps, taught numerous band camps for many schools in Southern, Central, and Eastern NC, and has instructed many award-winning high school units over the years including East Wake HS and Cape Fear High School.
