Scotland County Schools operates a Wide Area Network (WAN) connecting 15 school facilities and 3 administrative buildings to each other. Each school has one or more networked computer labs and one or more computers connected to the network in each classroom. Connection speeds across the WAN range from 1.54Mbps at our 8 frame-connected locations, to 1Gbps at our 7 fiber-connected sites. In all, over 2,600 networked computers, hundreds of network switches and routers, over 30 servers, and numerous software packages are maintained to support highest student achievement by a force of 4 technicians, 1 district level facilitator, 1 SIMS coordinator, a director, and an administrative assistant. Every classroom and office has Internet access that is monitored and content-filtered at a central location. All Scotland County Schools staff members are provided with Email accounts and access to online technology training.
We are slowly upgrading all of our sites to gigabit speeds between closets and to all servers, and some of our sites already have gigabit to the desktop on a limited basis. The upcoming 24 months will see an increase in this effort as we begin to upgrade our wiring and electronics. We are also moving towards Terabyte storage capacity on all of our file servers with some already at that level.
